Document Freedom Day March 31st

With a set of software tools we have, for the time being and the majority of cases, secured our freedom to write and program our own documents. For this freedom we are even willing to pay the price of some proprietary software licenses. But is that enough to keep abreast of ever new imposition of proprietary formats, e.g. for translation memory or collborative editing?

EU asked China to enforce patents against open standards

The first meeting of the EU-China IP Working Group took place in Beijing on 18 October 2005. Mr. Luc Devigne headed the European side, which raised concerns about exemptions in the Chinese law that prevent European patent holders from individually collecting royalties for open standards. The revised Chinese patent law of 2009 contains more such exemptions.

Jim Bessen: Do Patents Work as Property?

Jim Bessen and colleagues found by statistical analysis that innovators are nowadays, unlike 20 years ago, losing more money by patent litigation than they are gaining from patent royalties. Bessen correlates these findings to changes in patent law which made the boundaries of patents more fuzzy.

Introducing dynamic variables into document templates

Currently the document templates of the A2E multilingual hypertext system only process variables that have been fully rendered into strings and stored in DBM database files before template processing began. While it is desirable to treat variables in this way for sake of speed, it is not always adequate. There is a large gray area of vocabulary expansion that we want to happen outside of DBM files, using the latest values as they were set in the tempate itself.
